Judge Shepherd and Prof. Moore's Hearing Held Today
The Senate Judiciary Committee continued hearings for judicial nominees, today focusing on Judge Bobby Shepherd for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit and Professor Kimberly Moore for the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. The hearing was brief, evidence of the bi-partisan support for these nominees.
Judge Bobby Shepherd is currently a Magistrate Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Arkansas. He graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Law with high honors in 1976, where he was an editor on the Arkansas Law Review. Sens. Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor both testified to the broad support the nominee had from the Arkansas legal community. Sen. Lincoln commented that he is "a man of honor, respected by his peers and the community." Sen. Pryor stated that the district judges of the Eighth Circuit are "enthusiastic" about this nominee. He was unanimously rated "well qualified" by the ABA.
Professor Kimberly Moore is currently an intellectual property and patent law professor at George Mason University School of Law. She is nationally recognized as an expert in these areas; she has published a textbook on patent law with the current Chief Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and has testified as an expert witness in several cases. Her research has focused on the litigation of intellectual property and patent law cases, which has given her a good background for her role as a judge. Sen. Warner offered support for the nominee; his statement will be placed in the record.
Sen. Hatch, the only Committee member present, stated that he felt that both are excellent candidates and "deserve the support of the Committee and the Senate as a whole."
