An Unfortunate Milestone for Judge Boyle
Today marks a disappointing "anniversary." One year ago, Judge Terrence Boyle was voted out of the Judiciary Committee and has been waiting for a confirmation vote on the Senate Floor ever since. He was originally nominated to the Fourth Circuit Court in 2001, making his wait the longest in history for a circuit court nominee. That is not even counting the fact that Judge Boyle was originally nominated for this position by President George H.W. Bush in 1991, but was not given a hearing by the Democratically-controlled Judiciary Committee at that time. Judge Boyle has served on the District Court for Eastern North Carolina for 22 years, the last nine as chief judge. He has been asked to sit with the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals 12 times due to the vacancies on that court. He received a unanimous rating of "well qualified" by the ABA.
Judge Boyle deserves an up-or-down vote. It is disrespectful to this dedicated public servant to allow his confirmation to be obstructed further.
