Partisan Tensions in Senate Over Judicial Nominations Continue to Build
In response to Republican criticism over Senator Reid's broken promises and Democratic persistent obstruction of confirmation of judicial nominees, Senator Leahy expressed the unlikely movement of the judicial nominees as the year progresses due to adherence to the Democratic-imagined farse, the "Thurmond Rule," "whereby no judicial nominees are confirmed in the latter part of a presidential election year without the consent of both sides."
Senator Leahy’s substantiation, like Senator Reid's promises, is empty in lieu of the facts that there were less than four circuit court nominations left pending without an up or down vote in both 1980 and 2000. There are currently ten circuit court nominees pending, including DC Circuit nominee Peter Keisler who was originally nominated in June of 2006.
