From the very founding of our nation, Americans have been resistant to what we perceive as excessive taxation by the government. For a majority of our history, the United States did not have a federal income tax. Indeed, at one point a federal income tax on individuals was actually found to be illegal and unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court.
