President's Message for September

The November mid-term elections are now just a few weeks away, and prospects for decisive rejection of the Obama-Reid-Pelosi team are bright. Polls show Harry Reid could lose his Senate seat, and Nancy Pelosi her Speaker’s post, while voters appear likely to decisively reject Obama’s turn to the left, a turn that misread the 2008 election’s message, failed to right the American economy and weakened America’s position in world affairs. A Republican victory in November will send a new message: “Yes, we (the People, not government) can … create, innovate and bring jobs and economic recovery via less government, less spending and less taxes.”

RNLA’s Election Education Programs on Run-Up to 2010 Midterm Elections

RNLA’s election education efforts this year have been unprecedented. Our National Election Law Seminar in Grand Rapids, Michigan in mid-August was an outstanding success, as reported here last month, with over 200 attendees, many from key Midwestern states (Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan) in attendance. RNLA chapters have conducted or scheduled over a dozen local election law training programs, including seven in my home state, California. These election education efforts aid the recruitment of volunteer lawyers to assist the more than twenty governorships, ten U.S. Senate seats and seventy U.S. House seats that are up for grabs in November. Among the notable state events was the Florida Chapter’s successful half-day election law seminar on September 10 with close to 70 attendees where attendees heard from Attorney General candidate Pam Bondi and Republican nominee for Governor Rick Scott. RNLA’s Washington, DC Chapter also held a Regional Training event for lawyers interested in volunteering in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Additional trainings are scheduled in Maryland, Virginia, Nevada, New York, Illinois, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Please click here to visit the RNLA’s events page for a full listing of events.

Your volunteer assistance will be vital to election protection efforts, and could make the difference in the close races that we expect throughout the country. Chuck Cooper Named 2010 Republican Lawyer of the Year

RNLA is pleased to announce that RNLA’s former Vice Chairman and Supreme Court appellate advocate Charles J. “Chuck” Cooper is the 2010 Republican Lawyer of the Year. Chuck has served RNLA faithfully and diligently over the years. In addition to his current role as Vice Chairman, Chuck chaired the 2007 and 2008 RNLA’s National Policy Conferences in Washington, DC, and has spoken at several RNLA events over the years.

Chuck is the senior partner of the Washington, DC law firm of Cooper & Kirk, PLLC. He served as law clerk to Judge Paul Roney of the Fifth (now Eleventh) Circuit Court of Appeals, and to Justice (later Chief Justice) William H. Rehnquist, Mr. Cooper joined the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice in 1981. In 1985 President Reagan appointed Mr. Cooper to the position of Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel. Mr. Cooper reentered private practice in 1988, as a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of McGuire Woods. From 1990 until the founding of Cooper & Kirk in 1996, he was a partner at Shaw, Pittman, Potts & Trowbridge where he headed the firm's Constitutional and Government Litigation Group. In 1998, Chuck was appointed by Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist to serve as a member of the Standing Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure of the Judicial Conference of the United States. He was named recently by the National Law Journal as one of the 10 best civil litigators in Washington, DC. Chuck has argued important cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and the federal appellate courts. He has defended important voter initiatives in the States, including the Michigan anti-discrimination and preferences initiative sponsored by Ward Connerly and more recently, defending California’s Proposition 8 constitutional amendment that affirms the right to marriage exclusively between a man and a woman. Congratulations to our outstanding 2010 Republican Lawyer of the Year, Chuck Cooper.

Please join us at the Capitol Hill Club on October 7 where we will honor Chuck Cooper for his many years of service to the Republican Party. Leading Republicans will be on hand to help celebrate this year’s Lawyer of the Year Chuck Cooper. Additional information on Lawyer of the Year is available by clicking here.

Until next month, we hope that you find the time to volunteer for a campaign in your area. Regardless of where you live, there is likely a close race at the state or local level. Thank you for all you do.
