Alan Orantes Forst was appointed to a four year term as Chairman of the Florida Unemployment Appeals Commission by Governor Jeb Bush on July 19, 2001. This apppointment is subject to Florida Senate confirmation. The Unemployment Appeals Commission reviews approximately 8000 decisions issued by appeals referees throughout the State of Florida.
Before his appointment, Chairman Forst spent nearly three years in private practice, as counsel and partner at the Stuart, Florida firm of Crary Buchanan. Chairman Forst specialized in labor and employment law, representing plaintiffs and employees. He was selected for the executive councils of both the Florida Bar's and the Federalist Society's Labor and Employment law sections, and remains on these bodies. He was also designated as the Professional of the Year by the Martin County Human Resources Association.
Prior to arriving in Florida, Chairman Forst served in a variety of government positions in Washington, D.C., including political appointments in the Reagan and Bush administrations. Among the agencies where Chairman Forst practiced law are the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division, the Department of Labor's Employment Standards Administration, the Merit Systems Protection Board, and as special assistant to Clarence Thomas at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Chairman Forst also taught at the Northern Virginia Law School.
Alan Forst, a graduate of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and the Columbus School of Law of the Catholic University of America, resides in Palm City, Florida (about 30 miles and many chads north of Palm Beach) with his wife Diana and children Amanda, Andrew, and Victoria. He commutes weekly to this agency's Tallahassee headquarters. |
