Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri. Earned a Bachelors of Science in Economics from the Wharton School of Business and a Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois.

Worked as in-house counsel for eight years, first for John Deere and then for The May Department Stores Company. Was appointed then elected to the Affton Board of Education in St. Louis, Missouri, and later was elected and re-elected President of the board. Also served as adjunct professor of business law at St. Louis Community College.

Appointed to the Bush Administration in 2002 at the U.S. Department of Education as Special Counsel and Director of Communications in of the Office of Postsecondary Education. In 2003 was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary for Financial Education at the U.S. Department of Treasury.

Worked in numerous federal, state and local campaigns for Republican candidates.
