Currently Executive Director of a non-profit corporation dedicated to building a residential facility for the mentally ill. Graduate of Earlham College, Rhode Island College (Secondary Ed), and the Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii. Formerly a 12-year State Representative in the Hawaii State Legislature (November, 1988 to November 2000). Conservative Democrat at the time; became a Republican in February, 2004, primarily over differences with the Democrats concerning public education reform, privatization of governmental services, support of small business, and how to wage the war on terror. I am a Republican because our party prioritizes the four F's: family, faith, (economic)freedom, and (international)freedom. Married to Jane Hurn Stegmaier, a Montessori Pre-school teacher, and parent of a son and a daughter, graduates of Hawaii's public schools, living in Tucson and Sacramento, respectively.
