Ryan Trainer is Executive Vice President and General Counsel for the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA), a U.S.-based trade association that is dedicated to protecting and enhancing the growth, profitability and stature of the mattress manufacturing industry. Mr. Trainerís duties include managing ISPAís government relations and advocacy efforts, and general legal matters.
Prior to joining ISPA in 2002, Mr. Trainer was a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Clifford Chance LLP, where he specialized in international regulatory, trade policy, product liability, financial privacy and commercial matters.
Mr. Trainer has represented U.S. and foreign manufacturers, service providers and trade associations on a broad variety of subjects arising under U.S. and international law that involve trade in goods and services (with particular emphasis on manufacturing and financial services) and the protection of intellectual property rights in foreign countries. He has appeared before a number of federal and state government agencies, the U.S. Congress and state legislatures, the courts, North American Free Trade Agreement Dispute Settlement Panels and the United Nations Iraq Claims Commission. Mr. Trainer has spoken on consumer privacy, international trade and product liability matters before various industry groups, and has lectured on international trade law and policy at the George Mason University School of Law.
Mr. Trainer is a member of the District of Columbia and Commonwealth of Virginia bars, and is admitted to practice before the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Court of International Trade and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Born in Copenhagen, Denmark, Mr. Trainer is a graduate of the University of Colorado (Bachelor of Arts, Economics, with distinction, 1978) and received his law degree from George Washington University (Juris Doctor, with honors, 1981).
Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Trainer was a staff attorney in the Office of Chief Counsel for Import Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce (1981-1984).
