My law practice focuses on intellectual property and complex commercial litigation involving patents, copyrights, trademarks, claims of unfair competition, and trade secret misappropriation.

I am licensed to practice law in the States of Texas and Colorado, registered to practice law in the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and admitted to practice law before the United States Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the United States District Courts for the Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western Districts of Texas.

I received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1985, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Houston in 1989, a Doctor of Jurisprudence (cum laude) from South Texas College of Law in 1995, and a Master of Laws in Intellectual Property and Information Law from the University of Houston in 2005. My LL.M. thesis, entitled "Proposal for a Uniform Federal Common Law of Attorney-Client Privilege for Communications with U.S. and Foreign Patent Practitioners," was published in the Spring 2005 issue of the Texas Intellectual Property Law Journal.

Prior to joining McKool Smith, I was an Associate at Dewey Ballantine and at Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison. Prior to practicing patent litigation, I practiced civil and commmercial litigation and criminal defense in Houston, Texas as a Shareholder at Willi Law Firm, P.C. from 1996-2000. Before practicing law, I was an electrical engineer for 10 years involved in system operations and planning of electrical power distribution and transmission systems. I am also a Licensed Professional Engineer in Texas.

My professional affilations include: American Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Law Association, Austin Bar Association, Austin Intellectual Property Law Association, College of the State Bar of Texas, the Federal Bar Association, and the Republican National Lawyers Association.

I am also affliated with the following organizations: University of Texas Ex-Students' Association - Life Member, University of Houston Alumni Association - Life Member, South Texas College of Law Alumni Association, Austin Toastmasters, Capitol Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America - Adult Leader & Eagle Scout, National Rifle Association - Benefactor Member & NRA Certified Instructor, Texas State Rife Association - Benefactor Member, National Skeet Shooting Association - Life Member, Texas Skeet Shooters Association - Life Member & 2003 Texas C-Class High-Overall Skeet Champion, Capitol City Trap & Skeet Club - Life Member, Ducks Unlimited, International Taekwondo Alliance - Second Degree Black Belt (2007), Society of American Magicians, and Bethany Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod.

I was born in Houston, Texas on April 3, 1963. I have been married to my wife, Tracy J. Willi, for nearly 15 years. We have four boys -- Alexander, Andrew, John Henry, and Michael.
