Timothy L. O’Reilly has over 20 years of legal experience in the Long Beach area. He is a highly skilled trial lawyer with extensive experience in handling both civil and criminal matters. He has worked in both private practice as well as government service. Timothy has a great reputation for being a professional, who is a strong and tough advocate, and who is a true fighter for his client’s cause. He has tried dozens of cases to a jury and has an outstanding success record on matters he handles.

In recognition of his skill and professional standards, Timothy was honored with the recognition and rating by the prestigious Martindale-Hubble lawyer peer rating system at its highest level rating of “AV” (Preeminent Skills, Highly-Ethical).

Timothy’s legal experience ranges from handling the simple to the complex, in a wide variety of legal areas. He has worked on both the plaintiff and defense sides of cases. His experience includes handling business disputes, real estate litigation, personal injury matters, governmental administrative/licensing actions, and appellate work. Coupled with a vast range of experience in handling criminal cases, he has made himself well known, and well trusted, in the legal community and courts. His current practice areas cover civil trials, and business disputes and trust litigation.

Prior to joining Taubman, Simpson, Young & Sulentor, Timothy was the Assistant City Prosecutor in the Long Beach City Prosecutor’s Office. He joined that office as a Deputy Prosecutor shortly after returning from an overseas military deployment. Within a short period of time, he proved his skills as an outstanding prosecutor and trial lawyer. He was promoted to the highest appointed position in the office: Assistant City Prosecutor. There he supervised all court operations, office policy, budget matters, and over 20 attorneys. During his tenure, he held oversight responsibility for the prosecution of literally tens of thousands of cases.

He was privileged to have the opportunity of working with two of Long Beach’s most distinguished and notable trial attorneys, Edward P. George, Jr., and Albert C. S. Ramsey. While working with them, his practice focused on representing prominent and high profile clients in all aspects of both civil and criminal cases.

Timothy is a known leader in the local community. He is a past President of both the Long Beach Bar Association and the Long Beach Barristers. He was credited with leading the Bar Association’s efforts to start the long process of getting a new Long Beach courthouse. He has chaired numerous legal committees and has worked closely with our local Judges toward improving the delivery of justice services. He has even been an Instructor in the “Laws of Arrest” and the “Laws of Evidence” for new recruits at the Long Beach Police Academy as well as having been a “Cubmaster” leader for a 50-plus boy Cub Scout Pack.

He earned his law degree from Whittier College School of Law, where he was on the Honor Roll, Dean’s List, Law Review, and Moot Court Honors Board. He is a graduate of California State University, Long Beach, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, Public Law. Timothy is also a licensed California Real Estate Broker.

While at Long Beach State, Timothy earned a commission in the United States Army as a Field Artillery officer and was named a Distinguished Military Graduate. In 1986, he was appointed to the California Army National Guard. He has mobilized several times during his 24-year military career. These mobilizations include armed service in a law enforcement role, leading soldiers on the streets during the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, and humanitarian/peace-keeping service following the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. His most recent military activation was a year-long deployment in 2005. He was called to activate duty as part of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan Theater) and was assigned to the Joint Detention Operations Group, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. There, he served ‘inside the wire’ in the role of a military police/correctional officer, as the Deputy, and later acting Operations Officer (S-3), supervising a guard force of several hundred troops. His responsibilities included ensuring the safe and humane care and treatment of the unlawful detainee enemy combatants. He was also assigned as the Civil-Military Affairs Officer (S-5) where his duties were to deal with the press, public relations, and governmental affairs.

He currently holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and is assigned as Commander, Training Site (Garrison), Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB), Los Alamitos. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Ft Leavenworth, Kansas and among his many military awards and decorations are the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Air Assault Badge. He is a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and the Military Officers Association of America.
