John C. Buckley III is the principal of Buckley Law (www.buckleylaw.com). He practices business, asset protection and estate planning law in Colorado Springs CO. He is a United States Air Force Academy graduate who flew fighters. He was checked out in the F-106, T-33 and T-41 (instructor pilot). He logged time in the O-2, T-38, F-101, F-4, F-15, F-16, L-39, and MIG-29. Additionally, he taught political science and coached fencing at the Academy.
After ten years on active duty, he left the active military to attend Harvard Law School, where he graduated with concentrations in corporate litigation and international law. He practiced with a large law firm in the Midwest, and then established a business and law practice in Dharhan, Saudi Arabia, where he worked from 1991-95. He has been an international business consultant with 25 years’ experience in Middle Eastern culture and business practices, as well as experience in the new Russia.
In 20+ years of practice, John Buckley developed expertise in the use of sophisticated legal tools that protect clients’ estates and businesses. This has become a major focus of Buckley Law’s practice. This requires a logical integration of business, estate, tax, charitable and asset protection planning (including offshore planning), based upon each client’s unique needs. Additionally, the Firm has represented numerous public and private charitable foundations, from start-up (including establishing non-profit status with the IRS) to maturity. Buckley Law served as legal counsel and formed a multi-million dollar community foundation which serves the needs of the USAF Academy. The most recent foundation formed by Buckley Law focused upon improving the health care of women in the nation of Liberia. Charitable planning is a major element of the Firm’s practice, from the simplest to the most sophisticated.
Mr. Buckley frequently uses his extensive legal and business background and training to offer specialized start up and exit planning services (including sophisticated asset protection planning) to business owners. John works with prospective business owners matching their goals to the most beneficial state laws when forming their new entity and with seasoned business owners to create successful exit plans whether the owner chooses to transfer his or her company to family members, co-owners, key employees or sell to outside third parties. In his business and exit planning practice, Buckley Law has developed a subspecialty in representing women entrepreneurs, high net-worth individuals and medical professionals.
He served on the Board of Directors of the National Lawyer’s Association (www.nla.org), and is a founding member of WealthCounsel LLC (www.wealthcounsel.com). Mr. Buckley has lectured all over the country on estate and asset preservation planning, including with The Heritage Institute, Estate Planning Councils nationwide, and national conferences for sectarian and professional organizations.
John Buckley is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserves. He was one of three staff officers who conceived, staffed and transitioned the aggressor concept from air to space. As a result, he was the plankholder (original) squadron commander of the first combined space test and aggressor squadron in the history of the USAF (14th TS, Schriever AFB CO).
John served on the Board of Directors of the Champions Foundation for local scholar athletes. He is an active member of the Christian Legal Society, Ecumenical Christian Legal Services (providing pro bono legal services to indigent persons in Colorado Springs), and is an allied atorney of the Alliance Defense Fund. He is also an active Rotarian and is on the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Colorado Springs. He served on the Board of Directors of the National Lawyers Association (www.nla.org), for 10 years, and was a founding member of WealthCounsel LLC (www.wealthcounsel.com), comprised of many of the top estate and business planning attorneys in America. He serves as the Secretary and board member of the Senior Resource Council (www.scrcos.org), serving the needs of seniors throughout the Front Range. He serves on the Board of the Colorado Parkinson Foundation (www.co-parkinson.org). He is a Life Member of the Fraternal Order of Military Pilots (1982-present); Air Force Association (1986-present); USAF Academy Association of Graduates, (1977-present). He belongs to the El Paso County Bar Association, and serves in several capacities with the Colorado Bar Association. Buckley Law is a member of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce.
