Teresa Lavenue has more than 20 years of technical experience with biotech and more
than 13 years of experience in the field of intellectual property patent prosecution and
client management. She has successfully represented U.S. and foreign clients in the
procurement, management, and development of intellectual property rights including
individual inventors, emerging companies, universities and Fortune 500 Companies.
Ms. Lavenue has written and/or prosecuted over 500 patent applications in the biotech
field covering a vast array of technologies such as immunology, antibodies, vaccine
development, vaccines in cancer therapy, cloning techniques, high-through put polymer
sequencing, virology, small molecule enzyme inhibition, siRNA and antisense inhibition,
inflammation cascade inhibition, carbon nanotubes, liposomes, DNA/RNA purification,
cancer biomarkers, transgenic plants, plant culture, insecticides, therapeutic plant
extracts, DNA/RNA and protein arrays, photo-lithography and medical devices. While
developing the broadest patent protection available, Ms. Lavenue has focused her
representation of clients in creating strategies to minimize the overall expense in
obtaining patent protection. To effectively manage large-sized patent portfolios, Ms.
Lavenue has developed various mechanisms and strategies to prepare and track patent
portfolios, including domestic and foreign patents.
As a key strategist, Ms. Lavenue works closely with business directors to obtain insights
into the client's financing or commercialization goals to develop long-term business
objectives to develop a patent portfolio that protects the intellectual property necessary
to realize these financing or commercialization goals.
Ms. Lavenue has conducted due diligence for major corporate transactions, performed
numerous freedom to operate analyses and prepared numerous invalidity and
noninfringement opinions to assist clients to bring their products to market free of
meritorious infringement claims by others. She has conducted patent landscape searches
and analysis to assist clients in understanding the market and to make informed
licensing decisions. Ms. Lavenue has also prepared patent term extension applications
and obtained the extended patent term recapturing patent term lost for delays in
obtaining market approval from the FDA.
Ms. Lavenue graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Washington College of Law of the
American University in Washington, D.C. After graduation, she served as a law clerk for
Chief Judge Glenn Archer at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Prior to attending law school, Ms. Lavenue performed scientific research for seven years
at Vanderbilt University (Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics) and
Georgetown University (Division of Molecular Virology and Immunology).
Ms. Lavenue enjoys skydiving, gardening and mountain climbing and has climbed 6 of the "7 summits" with her husband.
