Carrie Cordero is an attorney in private practice in Washington, DC. She has also served as Georgetown Law's first Director of National Security Studies since November 2011, and an Adjunct Professor of Law since August 2010. Previously, Ms. Cordero served in national security related policy and operational positions with the Department of Justice from 2000-2010, most recently as Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for National Security. In that capacity, she advised senior leadership on the National Security Act, the USA Patriot Act, and other relevant laws and executive orders, while serving as co-chair of an interagency group established by the Director of National Intelligence to improve processes related to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). Prior to that assignment, Ms. Cordero served in a joint duty capacity as a Senior Associate General Counsel at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), where she worked on the legislation, implementation and oversight of significant amendments to FISA. At the ODNI, she also served as the legal advisor to the National Counterproliferation Center, as an advisor to senior leadership on civil liberties law and policy, and as an interagency coordinator of sensitive national security prosecutions. Previously, she was an Attorney Advisor in the former Office of Intelligence Policy and Review at the Department of Justice, where she worked with the FBI and other Intelligence Community agencies on critical counterterrorism and counterintelligence investigations, and appeared frequently before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. She also served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of Texas. Ms. Cordero joined the attorney staff of the Department of Justice through the Attorney Generalís Honors Program. Ms. Cordero earned her B.A., magna cum laude, from Barnard College, Columbia University; and J.D., cum laude, from Washington College of Law, American University.
