In a rousing speech at the Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) 23rd annual National Policy Conference in Arlington, Va., Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) thanked the members for protecting the rule of law and standing up to the abuse of power of the Biden administration.
Cruz is the 2024 Hon. Ed Meese Award III winner, given annually to an individual who has upheld the rule of law in the face of adverse political challenges. During his remarks, Cruz said the award was especially meaningful to him because he served under Meese in the early years of his career. (more context—served under Meese where?)
“He was an extraordinary attorney general,” Cruz noted. “He was a towering figure in the law, and he was someone who was willing to stand up to corruption.
“As I look around at the men and women in the room, each of you is doing that in your respective states: standing up to the abuse of power.”
Cruz said it’s easy to become numb to the assaults on the rule of law because they are constant and relentless. “I believe this is the most lawless administration to ever serve in the history of America,” he added.
Cruz detailed the atrocities at the U.S. southern border as a result of Biden’s flagrant disregard for the law. He also pointed to Biden’s multiple student loan forgiveness schemes and Democrat lawfare against former President Trump as additional examples of the administration’s utter contempt for the rule of law.
“Our Constitution was not designed to have an executive that ignores the laws that are written in the books,” Cruz cautioned. “But Democrats feel they are justified. I think they rationalized it to themselves, saying, ‘We must save democracy. To save democracy we must stay in power.’”

Cruz said the indictments against Trump have little to do with Trump’s conduct or criminality. “They have everything to do with, number one, Democrats’ hatred of Trump and number two, the real target of these cases is the American people.
“The Freudian projection is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Every Democrat in America beats their chest and says we are defending democracy. Yet, this abuse of power is the greatest abuse on democracy that America has ever seen.”
Cruz also called out the Biden Department of Justice for its double standard in the classified documents cases against Trump and Biden.
“What is going on right now is so bad,” Cruz added. “I’ve never been more afraid for the country than I am right now.”
However, he concluded his address on a hopeful note. “The good news is sometimes things have to get really bad to wake people up across the country. I think November is going to be a really good election. I think all of us hope the results are that Donald Trump is elected and we have a Republican Senate and House. If we do, this country will turn around and turn around fast.”
