Today, the RNLA sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of President Trump's nominees to the Eleventh Circuit, current Florida Supreme Court Justices Barbara Lagoa and Robert Luck. It was signed by Floridian members and friends of the RNLA:
As Floridian members and friends of the Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA), we urge you to confirm Justices Barbara Lagoa and Robert Luck to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
Circuit court judges must be excellent lawyers with immense respect for the rule of law, a deep understanding of the separation of powers and federalism, reverence for the Constitution, and a thoughtful judicial temperament. Justices Lagoa and Luck possess these qualities.
Justice Lagoa is currently the first woman Cuban American to serve as a Justice on the Florida Supreme Court and previously was chief judge of the Third District Court of Appeal in Miami, having been elected by her colleagues. During her tenure she presided over approximately 11,500 cases and published over 500 written opinions. If confirmed, she would be the first Hispanic woman on the Eleventh Circuit. She also previously served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida. She is involved in charity and community causes and has served on the Board of Directors of Kristi House, a non-profit organization that aids battered women and child victims of sexual abuse.
Justice Luck currently serves as a Justice on the Supreme Court of Florida. Prior to his appointment, Justice Luck was a District Judge on the Florida Third District Court of Appeal, a Circuit Judge for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court of Florida, and an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of Florida. He was endorsed by the Miami Herald and won a retention election in 2017. Also in 2017, the Miami Jewish Legal Society awarded Justice Luck the “Rodef Sholem” Pursuer of Peace Award.
For these reasons and many more, we urge the Committee on the Judiciary to favorably report Justices Lagoa and Luck’s nominations to the Senate.
