Today, the RNLA posthumously presented former RNLA Board of Governors member Anne Ware Lewis of Georgia with the Robert J. Horn's Chairman's Award during the National Election Law Seminar in Charlotte, North Carolina.  

New Congress, old tactics continue: Senate Democrats continue to obstruct and delay President Trump’s nominees, both executive and judicial candidates referred to the Senate for advice and consent. Democrats’ goal has been to obstruct, delay, and hinder President Trump’s mandate, in part by denying timely confirmation of his nominees. Today, we want to provide an example of this problem and offer updated statistics on how unprecedented these efforts have been.

Today, President Trump sent to the Senate a list of executive branch nominations, which included many who were nominated during the last Congress, but either never had a hearing or were never voted on. Those nominated include: former RNLA Chair John Ryder, to be a Member of the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Valley Authority; former RNLA Chair Kimberly Reed, to be President of the Export-Import Bank of the United States; RNLA member James "Trey" Trainor, to be a Member of the Federal Election Commission; and RNLA member Dennis Kirk, to be Chairman of the Merit Systems Protection Board.

President George H.W. Bush will be greatly missed, not only by his family and those who knew him best, but by the whole country and world. President Bush proudly and honorably served his country, beginning by his heroic service in the United State Navy following the attacks on Pearl Harbor and then eventually as the youngest aviator (at that time) in the United State Navy. President  Bush became involved in politics by running for office and being appointed to several distinguishing positions throughout Republican committees and administrations. His last and most distinguishing political title came in 1988 when he was elected to serve as President of the United States, being the first incumbent vice president in 152 years to do so. Additionally, President Bush is part of only two father-son pairs in United States history to serve as Presidents.

RNLA Chair John Ryder wrote yesterday about how the Democrats' smear of Justice Brett Kavanaugh and their obvious efforts to play politics with his nomination have motivated conservative voters:

The dust has more or less settled from the Kavanaugh confirmation battle, but we will feel its effects for some time to come. It will take an entire term of the Supreme Court to begin to assess the impact of Justice Brett Kavanaugh on the court itself, but the political consequences are more immediate and tangible. . . .

On Saturday, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was confirmed by the Senate 50 to 48 with Vice President Mike Pence presiding.  Justice Kavanaugh was sworn-in Saturday evening.  He carried through on his promise to have an all-women first class of clerks, including one African-American woman.  This the first time in Supreme Court history that a justice has had an all-women class of clerks.
