Rep. Rodney Davis Fights for Honest Elections

Posted on Blog by Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) · April 29, 2020 11:09 AM

RNLA Executive Director Michael Thielen states: “In my 25 years in Washington, DC, Rep. Rodney Davis is the best leader of the House Administration Committee. And it is a good thing, as the Committee’s work has never been more important.”

Rep. Davis understands that election law changes should be bipartisan and we need to stop partisan attacks such as claims that Russia stole the election. As Davis explains in an op-ed entitled "Pelosi’s partisanship (and misinformation) threaten America's elections":

"No Tampering" with Vote Tallying Systems in 2016

Posted on Blog by Michael Thielen · January 10, 2020 8:01 PM

A major piece of news happened yesterday, or at least it should be news.  Foreign actors have changed ZERO votes on American voting machines.  The Committee on House Administration held a hearing entitled: 2020 Election Security-Perspectives From Voting System Vendors and Experts.  In a panel of the three manufacturers of virtually all the voting machines in the United States, the following exchange happened (emphasis added):

Ranking Member Rodney Davis (R-IL):  To your knowledge, has a foreign state ever successfully breached or hacked your vote tallying election machines?

Mr. Tom Burt, President and CEO, Election Systems & Software, Omaha, NE: No

Mr. John Poulos, President and CEO, Dominion Voting Systems, Denver, CO: No

Ms. Julie Mathis, President and CEO, Hart InterCivic, Austin, TX: No

Leader McConnell: SHIELD Act Would "Chill the Exercise of Free Speech"

Posted on Blog by Lisa Dixon · October 23, 2019 7:11 PM

This morning, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has been a steadfast defender of First Amendment rights, spoke on the Senate floor about the SHIELD Act under consideration by the House today.  He called it "the latest installment in Speaker Pelosi’s campaign to expand government’s control over Americans’ political speech."

Speaker Pelosi's current crusade against Americans' political speech rights began with H.R. 1, and the SHIELD Act contains portions of H.R. 1, the Honest Ads, and other dangerous provisions.  The RNLA sent a letter to the House opposing it.

SHIELD Act Would Regulate Americans' Political Speech Instead of Preventing Foreign Election Interference

Posted on Blog by Lisa Dixon · October 17, 2019 3:45 PM

Yesterday, the Committee on House Administration marked up the SHIELD Act (H.R. 4617, Stopping Harmful Interference in Elections for a Lasting Democracy Act).  The SHIELD Act contains the provisions of the Honest Ads Act, plus additional dangerous provisions.

If passed, it would likely have very little effect on foreign efforts to influence or interfere with U.S. elections.  Instead, it would regulate Americans seeking to exercise their First Amendment rights, with the effect of restricting political speech.

The RNLA sent a letter to the House opposing the SHIELD Act:

Weintraub Corrupts and Politicizes FEC, Undermines Elections

Posted on Blog by Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) · September 03, 2019 11:04 AM
In her seventeenth year of a six-year term on the Federal Election Commission (FEC), Commissioner Ellen Weintraub is showing her true partisan colors.  She is fanning the flames of distrust in government by misusing her government position to question the legitimacy of the 2016 presidential election (and all presidential elections before it), to troll the President, and to call for policing speech on the internet.
Appearing over the weekend on All In with Chris Hayes on the liberal MSNBC, Weintraub joined the chorus of Democrats attacking the Electoral College, oddly by relying on foreigners' confusion over it:

On Election Reforms, GOP Wants to Work, Democrats Want to Play Politics

Posted on Blog by Michael Thielen · August 28, 2019 8:26 PM

After the hotly contested election in 2000, Republicans and Democrats came together to pass the bipartisan Help America Vote Act ("HAVA").  HAVA was a response to the chaos of the 2000 Florida recount.  HAVA was not perfect but it represented a good faith effort on all sides to come together and passed 357-48 in the House and 92-2 in the Senate.  This should be the way all election reform is done.  Unfortunately, it is not true anymore.

Democrats Continue Partisan Grandstanding with Election Security Legislation

Posted on Blog by Robert Sinners · June 24, 2019 3:07 PM

On Friday, the House Administration Committee held a markup hearing to consider H.R. 2722, also known as the SAFE Act, “a bill to protect elections for public office by providing financial support and enhanced security for the infrastructure used to carry out such elections, and for other purposes, or a related measure, and for other purposes.”

House Admin Committee Defeats All GOP Amendments to Try to Fix HR 1

Posted on Blog by Lisa Dixon · February 26, 2019 9:10 PM

In today's markup of House Resolution 1, the House Committee on Administration defeated on party-line votes all amendments offered by the three Republican members to attempt to fix problems with the bill. The RNLA live-tweeted the markup, and here are some highlights (or, lowlights):
