Posted on Blog by Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) · January 15, 2025 4:17 PM

The Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) congratulates Federal Election Commissioner Trey Trainor on receiving board certification in Legislative and Campaign Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization (TBLS). Trainor is one of only 14 lawyers in the state of Texas to earn this prestigious certification, which recognizes a high level of expertise in the regulation of legislative institutions, campaign funding and operations, public integrity, and related constitutional issues.

House Admin Conducts Important Oversight of Federal Election Commission

Posted on Blog by Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) · September 21, 2023 9:57 AM

On Wednesday, the Committee on House Administration held the first formal oversight hearing of the Federal Election Commission (FEC) in over a decade. Chairman Bryan Steil explained in his opening remarks:

Today marks the first time in twelve years the Federal Election Commission, or the FEC, has come before the Committee on House Administration.

As Chairman of this Committee, I’m focused on building Americans’ confidence in our elections by making it easy to vote and hard to cheat. . .

Dems Want to Take Partisan Control of Speech Regulation

Posted on Blog by Elizabeth El-Rassy · June 25, 2021 4:52 PM

Democrat commissioners on the Federal Election Commission (FEC) are showing us just how dangerous it would be if Democrat-backed election bills become law. As Kimberley Strassel explained in an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal, Democrat Commissioner Ellen Weintraub is a case study for selective enforcement of FEC regulations.

Democrat Commissioners Aim to "Zombify" the FEC

Posted on Blog by Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) · June 08, 2021 7:45 PM

In Tuesday’s New York Times, Shane Goldmacher reported on the latest tactic by Democrats on the Federal Election Commission to punish more Americans for exercising free speech rights: deadlock enforcement votes, conceal the agency action from the public, and then default the agency in federal court. The Democrat strategy entails concealing from federal courts that the agency has decided matters on the merits in order to mislead federal judges into thinking the agency has failed to act in a timely manner and thereby trick federal judges into authorizing private enforcement lawsuits by liberal activist groups against conservatives.

Simple First-Steps Needed to Eliminate Election Fraud Concerns

Posted on Blog by Elizabeth El-Rassy · December 15, 2020 11:04 AM

Early voting has officially begun in Georgia to determine who will represent the state in the U.S. Senate. However, concerns still linger from the 2020 general election over the security of Georgia's election system. These concerns are part of a broader pattern of uneasiness about elections across the country. According to a recent Morning Consult survey, 40.6% of the respondents expressed distrust in the U.S. election system. A recent NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist survey reported that only 24% of Republicans thought the results of the 2020 election were accurate.

Senate Confirms 3 New FEC Commissioners

Posted on Blog by Elizabeth El-Rassy · December 09, 2020 6:00 PM

For the first time since 2017, all of the seats on the Federal Election Commission are filled. Allen Dickerson, Sean Cooksey, and Shana Broussard were confirmed by the Senate earlier today. Dickerson and Cooksey are Republicans, while Broussard is a Democrat. Some may find it odd for a Republican President to appoint a Democrat, but no more than 3 of the 6 commissioners can be from the same political party. The votes for the Republican nominees were largely along party lines.

FEC Chair Stops Liberal Group's Effort to Use Political Speaker's Ignorance to Go After Facebook

Posted on Blog by Elizabeth El-Rassy · August 06, 2020 6:41 PM

In July, the Federal Election Commission dismissed a complaint filed by the liberal Campaign Legal Center (CLC) against America Progress Now (APN). CLC alleged that APN had technically violated federal campaign finance regulations by failing to include required disclaimers for political ads on Facebook Ads run by APN's Facebook page. CLC also insinuated that APN was a "fake political group."  However, CLC's real motive was not to get the small potatoes APN. The Commission made the decision to dismiss the Campaign Legal Center's complaint unanimously. In FEC Chairman Trey Trainor's Statement of Reasons for the complaint's dismissal, he raised concerns how a technical violation could be used to chill free speech.

Blame for Lack of FEC Quorum Lies with Schumer, Not McConnell

Posted on Blog by Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) · November 06, 2019 9:42 PM

Since Republican Commissioner Matthew Petersen resigned in August, the Federal Election Commission has only had three commissioners and lacked the four commissioners necessary for it to approve agency actions.  Never missing an opportunity to make a political point while ignoring the facts, the left has continued criticizing Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for the lack of a quorum at the FEC (for example).

This is one of the worst lies of the left. This is 100% the Democrats' fault and a part of their war on free speech and democracy.

Today, President Trump sent to the Senate a list of executive branch nominations, which included many who were nominated during the last Congress, but either never had a hearing or were never voted on. Those nominated include: former RNLA Chair John Ryder, to be a Member of the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Valley Authority; former RNLA Chair Kimberly Reed, to be President of the Export-Import Bank of the United States; RNLA member James "Trey" Trainor, to be a Member of the Federal Election Commission; and RNLA member Dennis Kirk, to be Chairman of the Merit Systems Protection Board.
