Democrats Endanger Justices, Refuse to Help

Justice Kavanaugh’s would-be assassin is in part the result of a problem created by Democrats who have called for violence against the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative justices for their support for overruling Roe v. Wade, which was confirmed by the recent Dobbs draft opinion leak.

But worse yet, Democrats not only refuse to condemn the would-be assassin’s actions and other violence against the justices, they are intentionally blocking legislation that would provide the justices clearly needed protection. As Republican Leader Mitch McConnell stated:

This is exactly why the Senate passed legislation very shortly after the leak to enhance the police protection for the Justices and their families. This is commonsense, noncontroversial legislation that passed this chamber unanimously.

But House Democrats have spent weeks blocking it. The House Democratic majority has refused to take it up.  That needs to change. Right now. House Democrats must pass this bill and they must do it today. House Democrats need to stop their multi-week blockade against the Supreme Court security bill and pass it before the sun sets today.

Before House Democrats refused to act, the Senate Democrat Leader was helping create the problem.  Since the Supreme Court took up Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the most significant abortion case in recent history that could spell the end of Roe, Democrats like Senate Leader Chuck Schumer have called for violence.

And after a draft opinion was leaked in the Dobbs case, which revealed that the conservative justices were poised to overturn Roe, calls for violence grew louder while Democrats refused to condemn people protesting in front of the justices' houses. While Justice Alito was moved to an undisclosed location for his safety, the DOJ began providing round-the-clock protection for the justices at their homes.

But the Left’s calls for violence against the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative justices came to a head Wednesday morning after a heavily armed young man was arrested outside of the home of Justice Kavanaugh.  The would-be assassin, 26-year-old Nicholas Roske, admitted his intention to kill Justice Kavanaugh and then himself for Kavanaugh’s support for ending Roe v. Wade and protecting Second Amendment rights:

Senator McConnell expressed how Democrats’ calls for violence against the Supreme Court have led to exactly that.

This is exactly the kind of event many feared that a terrible breach of the Court’s rules and norms could fuel. This is exactly the kind of event that many worried the unhinged, reckless, apocalyptic rhetoric from prominent figures toward the Court––going back many months and especially in recent weeks––could make more likely.

Despite all this, Speaker Pelosi is still delaying efforts to protect the justices. Speaker Pelosi will not entertain the bill until next week:

Nancy Pelosi defended her decision not to bring a bill for a vote that would provide more security for Supreme Court Justices and their families until next week by saying Thursday that 'no one is in danger over the weekend.'

'I don't know how she can say' that no one is a threat over the weekend, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said during his briefing on Thursday, pointing to the fact that a man was arrested near Justice Brett Kavanaugh's home on Wednesday for a plot to kill the jurist.

We need to protect our justices and the sacred institution of the U.S. Supreme Court, not attack them when we do not get the result we want.
