Dear Chairman Grassley and Ranking Member Durbin:

The Leaders of the Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) urge your swift approval of Katherine Lane to serve as a United States District Court Judge for the District of Montana.

Ms. Lane carries comprehensive legal experience at the federal and state levels and in both the public and private sectors. After graduating magna cum laude from the Antonin Scalia Law School, Ms. Lane completed two federal judicial clerkships for the Honorable Thomas A. Varlan (Eastern District of Tennessee) and the Honorable Timothy M. Tymkovich (10th Circuit Court of Appeals). Following these clerkships, Ms. Lane joined the law firm Jones Day where she had a wide-ranging practice as an associate in the Government Relations Group.

Subsequently, Ms. Lane joined the Montana Attorney General’s office, where she was entrusted with defending and prosecuting civil cases on behalf of the state as Assistant Solicitor General and later as Deputy Solicitor General. Notably, Ms. Lane fought to preserve the state and federal Constitutional rights of Montanans and managed complex litigation unique to Montana’s rural jurisdictions. These matters included land use disputes involving intricate state and federal regulatory schemes.

After her service to the State of Montana, Ms. Lane joined the law firm Consovoy McCarthy, where she practiced constitutional and administrative law. There, she built on her experience as Deputy Solicitor General and represented several state governments as well as national, public-facing litigants. While in this role, Ms. Lane gained experience in both trial and appellate work.

Most recently, Ms. Lane served as Senior Litigation Counsel for the Republican National Committee, where she managed an extensive portfolio of election law matters in state and federal courts. As Senior Litigation Counsel, Ms. Lane worked to ensure that national elections remain open, fair, and honest across the country.

As a testament to her wide-ranging experience, Ms. Lane is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States, six federal appellate circuits, and the Supreme Court of Montana.

The success of our justice system is dependent on judges who defend and uphold the rights laid out in the U.S. Constitution. Ms. Lane’s background demonstrates her commitment to the legal profession and the rule of law.

Moreover, Ms. Lane’s fair temperament and outstanding work ethic come well regarded by an impressive body of recommenders, including current state attorneys general, current and former state solicitors general, former Tenth Circuit law clerks, among others in the legal profession and public policy space.

Therefore, the RNLA encourages the U.S. Senate to provide President Donald J. Trump with its advice and consent and expeditiously confirm Katherine Lane to serve as United States District Court Judge for the District of Montana.

Sincerely,

The Honorable Lee E. Goodman
