The RNLA submitted a letter to support H.R. 3412: The Election Security Assistance Act to Address the Nation’s Cyber-Security Needs in Elections. The letter states in part:
We believe H.R. 2722, known as The SAFE Act, does not accomplish the public’s demand for open, fair, and honest elections. H.R. 2722 places too much control in the hands of the federal government. Today, the Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) submitted a public comment to the United States Election Assistance Commission (EAC) regarding the proposed Voluntary Voting Systems Guidelines (VVSG) 2.0 Principles and Guidelines.
According to the EAC: "Voluntary Voting System Guidelines (VVSG) are a set of specifications and requirements against which voting systems can be tested to determine if the systems meet required standards. Some factors examined under these tests include basic functionality, accessibility, and security capabilities. HAVA mandates that EAC develop and maintain these requirements."
The VVSG was first established in 2005, and later partially updated in 2015. Currently, VVSG 2.0 Principles and Guidelines are up for consideration. This is the first time the Principles and Guidelines portion has been separated from the Requirements portion.
