Oakland NAACP Blames Rogue Prosecutor for Public Safety Crisis

The Oakland, California chapter of the NAACP has broken with its typical support for leftist policies and released a letter condemning the city's rogue prosecutor and the "defund the police" movement for the city's ongoing crime crisis. The Washington Free Beacon reported:

The Oakland NAACP released a statement Thursday calling for state and local elected leaders to declare a "state of emergency" as a result of increasing violent crime in the California city.

The statement, written by Oakland NAACP president Cynthia Adams and Bishop Bob Jackson of Acts Full Gospel Church, blasted soft-on-crime local officials as well as left-wing activism for the surge in crime.

"Failed leadership, including the movement to defund the police, our District Attorney’s unwillingness to charge and prosecute people who murder and commit life threatening serious crimes, and the proliferation of anti-police rhetoric have created a heyday for Oakland criminals," Adams and Jackson wrote.

Crime data from 2023 shows just how out of control the situation has gotten in Oakland:

Population-adjusted data so far for 2023 shows that people are 2½ times more likely to be a victim of a violent crime in Oakland than in San Francisco and three times more likely than in San Jose.

Property crimes are similarly disproportionate in Oakland — 1.7 times more likely to victimize someone there than in San Francisco, and four times more likely than in San Jose.

Unfortunately, Oakland is not alone in being a victim of the soft-on-crime policies of rogue prosecutors. The Heritage Foundation's Cully Stimson and Zack Smith recently explained: "The rogue prosecutor movement is dangerous, well-funded, and systematically destroying America’s communities."

Opposition to dangerous policies of rogue prosecutors and their allies is an area Republicans and Democrats should agree on. An op-ed for RedState argued:

[T]he issue of rising violent crime in blue parts of this country is making allies of people who otherwise have very little on which they agree politically. While in some ways it’s scary to have to rely on Democrats to be the voices of sanity on this issue, in cities with large concentrations of Democrats you have to work with the hand you’re dealt.

If you’re in such a city, keep the pressure up on your local officials when the Defund rhetoric/crime problem heats up, because as odd as it may sound this is one area where Democrats and Republicans alike at local levels increasingly agree on, as city-wide elections have repeatedly shown us over the last few years.
