Today, Justice Gorsuch's new book, A Republic if You Can Keep was officially released.

Early reviews and comments indicate that President Trump hit a home run when he nominated Justice Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Here are few quotes about and from the book that have come out in the last few days.      

Michael Avenatti, the lawyer for Kavanaugh accuser Julie Swetnick, infamously mispresented his client’s views in his effort to defame Justice Kavanaugh.  Avenatti was on his never-ending crusade for publicity that has him currently facing trial for extortion.  Now, the actions of another lawyer for a Kavanaugh accuser are raising questions about their motives and the underlying accusations. 

Senator Susan Collins is a force to be reckoned with in Washington, DC.

She is both a champion for Republican values and a strong independent voice in today’s world of extreme partisanship. She is uniquely admired and respected by her colleagues on both sides of the aisle.

Former FEC Chair and RNLA Board of Governors member Lee Goodman penned a column in The Hill laying bare the inadequacies of the Honest Ads Act pending in Congress. 

Goodman writes that the bill would “severely restrict the First Amendment rights of American citizens and media companies but barely impact foreign meddlers.” 

To address the kind of foreign meddling witnessed in 2016, Goodman recommends that Congress amend the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) to apply directly to foreign propagandists like the Internet Research Agency.  The law currently applies only to the U.S.-based agents of foreign principals.  House Democrats are expected to push a version of the Honest Ads Act when Congress returns next week.

Shortly after the 2018 midterm elections and the reversal of control in the House of Representatives, the Democrat majority made their policy priorities abundantly clear: impeaching President Trump, first and foremost. The impeachment demands have only gotten stronger as the voice, albeit not number, of the left-flank Liberals has grown in size among the Democratic caucus. However, today in National Review, Columnist Andrew C. McCarthy raised, and answered, an interesting question: Why haven’t these calls for impeachment gone anywhere?

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has jurisdiction to issue regulations and enforce federal campaign finance laws; in other words, to interpret and enforce the regulation of Americans' political speech, which is protected by the First Amendment.  

For years, Democrats have attempted to expand regulation of political speech through onerous disclaimer, disclosure, and reporting requirements; low contribution limits; making the FEC a partisan body controlled by the President's party (such as in H.R. 1 and the perennial DISCLOSE Act); outright speech prohibitions; and even through spending limits (which the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional back in Buckley v. Valeo).  

With the resignation of Republican FEC Commissioner Matt Petersen, the FEC is back in the news.

The Democrats of the 2010s have become the Party that refuses to respect results or the rule of law.  While the most obvious example is their continuing efforts to undermine elections, the most recent example, and most troubling to those who practice law, may be the recent threats of Senate Democrats to the courts.  As we wrote last week, Senator Whitehouse threatened the Supreme Court in an unprecedented amicus brief.  Today, Senate Republicans responded.

After the hotly contested election in 2000, Republicans and Democrats came together to pass the bipartisan Help America Vote Act ("HAVA").  HAVA was a response to the chaos of the 2000 Florida recount.  HAVA was not perfect but it represented a good faith effort on all sides to come together and passed 357-48 in the House and 92-2 in the Senate.  This should be the way all election reform is done.  Unfortunately, it is not true anymore. 

If journalists were remotely objective, they would praise Attorney General Bill Barr for releasing virtually the entire “Mueller report.”  On the other hand, if they were objective, they would condemn Obama's Attorney General Eric Holder for his complete stonewalling of the Fast and Furious investigation.  That said, the rare objective journalist Sharyl Attkisson is still working on getting the truth of the Eric Holder Justice Department’s Fast and Furious scandal (emphasis in original):
